These are extraordinary times - as is clearly evident in the daily headlines. Climate change, diminishing resources, burgeoning population and cultural conflict are but a few of the challenges facing post-modern civilization. It will take extraordinary solutions - the transformation of our personal lives and many of our social institutions - to overcome the obstacles we face, but it can be done and the rewards will be great.
The evolution of all living systems, including civilizations, moves in mega cycles that come to turning points where the slightest nudge can have an enormous impact. Chaos theory has poetically dubbed this phenomena as the butterfly effect, after the idea that the flap of butterfly wings in Brazil can cause thunderstorms in Beijing if those wings flutter in just the right way at the most sensitive moment. Some of these monumental moments may only happen once in many millennia, but they do happen, and right now we are in the midst of the mother of all moments.
Like a rocket ship flying at warp speed, the slightest change of our direction can lead to enormous change. Never before has humanity been in such critical circumstances and never before have we had such power to guide our journey towards higher understanding. These are the premises upon which this ship into cyberspace is launched. And the intention within these pages is to create a forum for finding the triggers of transformation that will steer us onto the course of a promising future.
Before we even ponder the thoughts of the great transformational thinkers of our times, we should first take care to lighten our load for the trip. We carry the momentum of thousands of years of cultural conditioning which could make it tricky to manoeuvre the forthcoming turn that society must take. While culture has brought us the highest forms of art and beauty, it has also burdened us with the increasing weight of our coveted cultural concepts, of whatever flavour they might be. In order to create a genuine probability path towards true transformation, the first step is to reduce the effects of all the socialization we have experienced up to now. The time has come to drop our sacred beliefs so that we can open the mind to something new under the sun.
Were you ever fortunate enough to perform one of those biology experiments with a pure culture? Starting with a pristine nutrient medium, you could introduce a speck of anything, then seal it, and come back a week later to see all kinds of colorful hairy molds that had grown from that initial input. Like butterflies producing thunderbolts, it is amazing what we can make happen when we start with a clean slate.
Our consciousness, in its primordial state, is just as pure as that new culture in the biology lab. If we could clean out the cobwebs and unwieldy clutter that has accumulated from years of cultural conditioning, we could find that empty space within our mind where all is calm, where no sounds are heard and no images seen. Imagine there are no religions, no politics, none of our own vested interests in what our upbringing has taught us to think we are, or should be. Let’s drop all thoughts from our brains about whom we have been up till now. Imagine only an immense realm of peace and quiet within our true selves. There, with a beginner´s mind, deep in the core of egoless mindfulness, in the stillness of silence, is where the voyage into our personal transformation begins.
Welcome to your own inner meditation, with a distant view of your highest self. And when you are absolutely sure that you have shed all your cultural accoutrements and stand free to create a new future out of pure consciousness, only then should you dare to flap your newly found wings of freedom.
